This medal was produced by the United States Mint to celebrate Benjamin Franklin's efforts to organize America's first fire service in 1736. To commemorate Benjamin Franklin’s service to this country’s firefighters, Congress authorized the 1992 Benjamin Franklin Firefighters Silver Medal as a way to honor his contributions and those of the brave men and women who keep us safe every day.
